10207 Passacaglia - 10/03 (6:00 PM - 8:00 PM)

This is one of the most intricate quilts recently created. If you have signed up for this class you probably have seen our sample, the book, and/or the profusion of images on the Internet. It is made from rosettes constructed from five different shapes tessellated and repeated throughout in an extremely complicated manner.

The process of construction, however, is pretty simple. It is English paper pieced (EPP) an old method which requires paper templates for each piece around which fabric is wrapped and basted and then whip stitched together.

Millefiori Quilts by Willyne Hammerstein

Fabric
How much-can’t say-why? Because it depends on so many choices you will make e.g. fussy cutting or not, will you make the whole quilt or only part of it, will your choices change as you proceed, etc.
I suggest you pick a few fabrics to start to bring to the first class.
Double sided tape for fussy cutting (to be explained in class)

Notions:
Paper templates: You can make your own from card stock, old magazine pages, freezer paper, etc or you can purchase already precut paper shapes. I prefer the latter since it saves a huge amount of time and the pieces are extremely accurate. We stock the pieces in a starter pack. You can reuse them, but you will probably want to buy more than one pack.

*Template plastic (if you make your own templates)

Glue pen for basting the fabric around the paper template (this saves you time that takes to thread baste). If you choose to thread baste, use thread you don’t care to waste, since it will be thrown away at the end.

Fabric scissors or rotary cutter If you want to create spectacular kaleidoscopic effects (and who wouldn’t want to!) you should purchase the set of five acrylic templates.

Hand sewing needles-preferable thin ones. I like the black ones with the gold eye-either size 9 or 10
Thin, strong cotton thread preferably Aurifil
Basic sewing supplies-scissors, seam ripper, thimble, etc. (you probably will not need pins, but if you do-the thinnest you can find)
